Winter Tours — Northern Lights, Snowshoeing & Alpine Adventures

The optimal aurora-viewing window is late September through March, with peak darkness and solar activity from December to February. Fresh Adventures schedules Yukon departures during new-moon periods for the clearest skies.

Temperatures can drop to –30 °C in the Yukon and –15 °C in the Canadian Rockies. Guides provide cold-weather briefings and equipment checklists. Most evenings are spent in heated lodges or cabins, so extreme cold exposure is limited to daytime activities.

No prior experience is required for snowshoe tours — guides teach techniques on day one. Ski-touring departures are rated intermediate and assume comfort on groomed runs. Each listing clearly states the prerequisite skill level.

Layered merino or synthetic base layers, insulated mid-layers, a waterproof outer shell, insulated boots rated to –30 °C, and quality gloves and headwear. Snowshoes and poles are provided. A full packing list is sent after booking.

All guides hold Wilderness First Responder certifications and carry satellite communicators. Tours include detailed risk assessments, avalanche safety equipment where applicable, and contingency shelter plans. Group sizes are kept to 4–10 for safety.
