Top 10 Cities With the Fastest Internet for Remote Workers

Speed, reliability, and uptime β€” ranked. Because dropped video calls and slow uploads are the enemy of remote work productivity.

By TravelDealForge Research Team β€’ March 2, 2026 β€’ 9 min read

Why Speed Alone Isn't Enough

Average download speed is the headline number, but for remote workers it's only part of the story. Upload speed matters for video calls and cloud syncing. Latency (ping) affects real-time collaboration tools. Uptime determines whether you can reliably join that client meeting. And fibre coverage tells you whether you'll actually get those speeds at your accommodation, not just in the city centre.

We ranked these 10 cities using a weighted composite of all five factors, based on Ookla Speedtest Global Index data, Cloudflare Radar, and on-the-ground reports from remote workers in 2025–2026.

Tips for Ensuring Fast Internet While Traveling

  1. Always test before committing. Run a speed test (fast.com or speedtest.net) at your accommodation before signing a lease. Test at different times of day β€” evening speeds often drop.
  2. Have a mobile backup. Buy a local SIM with a generous data plan as a backup connection. In many countries, 4G/5G tethering is reliable and affordable.
  3. Consider Starlink. In cities with inconsistent fixed-line internet (Bali, parts of Latin America), portable Starlink units are increasingly popular among nomads.
  4. Choose fibre-connected accommodation. Ask your host specifically whether the connection is fibre, DSL, or mobile broadband. The difference is significant.
  5. Coworking as insurance. Even with great home internet, having a nearby coworking space as a backup is wise for critical meeting days.

Don't Forget Insurance

Fast internet solves one part of the remote work puzzle, but you also need protection. Your laptop, camera, and other equipment are your tools β€” make sure they're covered against theft and damage. Our travel insurance page compares policies that cover work equipment.
