Why Remote Employees in High-Cost Countries Are Switching to Global Health Plans

The cost gap between local private cover and a portable global plan has crossed 50% in the highest-cost markets. Employees noticed first.

The Quiet Switch

For most of the last decade, "global health insurance" was a product for executives and diplomats. By 2026 it has become a viable alternative to private cover in some of the most expensive healthcare markets in the world β€” and remote workers in those markets are switching faster than HR teams realise.

The Cost Gap, Country by Country

CountryLocal private coverGlobal planNote
United States$650–$1,200/mo (ACA Silver)$180–$280/mo (Remote Health)Most dramatic gap; switch is straightforward for employees living abroad >6 months/year.
SwitzerlandCHF 380–520/mo (LAMal + supplementary)CHF 160–230/moOnly viable for non-Swiss-resident periods; LAMal mandatory while resident.
United KingdomΒ£90–£180/mo (private top-up over NHS)Β£130–£190/moLess dramatic; switch driven by portability, not price.
SingaporeS$280–$520/mo (Integrated Shield Plan)S$220–$340/moPrice-comparable; switch driven by regional travel coverage.
Germany€480–€720/mo (private)€180–€260/moStatutory cover remains mandatory; switch happens on departure from German residence.

Why the Switch Happens

Three forces converge. Local private premiums in high-cost markets continue to inflate at 6–12% annually. Global plans, sized against a more diversified pool, inflate at 3–5%. And portability β€” the ability to keep cover when the employee relocates β€” has become a near-universal preference among workers under 40.

What HR Should Do About It

Two responses are working. The first is to offer a global plan as the default and a local top-up as an opt-in β€” this preserves choice while shifting the cost base. The second is a fixed benefits allowance that employees apply to whichever cover they prefer; HR avoids per-country administration and employees self-select into the most cost-efficient option.
