How We Measure Safety
"Safe" means different things in different contexts. A country with low crime but frequent earthquakes isn't the same kind of safe as one with moderate crime but no natural disaster risk. We evaluate safety across four pillars:
- Crime Index — Based on Numbeo data and government statistics. Lower is better.
- Healthcare Quality — WHO rankings and Lancet Healthcare Access Quality Index scores.
- Political Stability — World Bank Governance Indicators and democratic stability assessments.
- Natural Disaster Risk — World Risk Report data on earthquake, flood, storm, and volcanic activity.
Our overall safety score is a weighted composite of all four, with crime and healthcare weighted slightly higher as they affect daily life most directly.

Safety Starts with Insurance
Even in the safest countries, unexpected events happen. A sports injury in Japan, a dental emergency in Portugal, or a stolen laptop in Singapore can still derail your trip financially. Travel insurance ensures these incidents remain inconveniences rather than catastrophes.
For remote workers spending extended periods abroad, we recommend insurance that covers: emergency medical treatment, evacuation, personal electronics and work equipment, and trip interruption. Compare options on our travel insurance comparison page.
