Backpacker & Gap Year Guide

Travel Insurance for Long-Term Travel

Planning months of travel? Standard holiday insurance won't work. Here's what long-term travelers need to know about extended coverage.

Last updated: February 2026 • 9 min read

Whether you're backpacking Southeast Asia, taking a gap year, traveling round-the-world, or slow-traveling through Europe, standard travel insurance isn't designed for trips lasting more than a few weeks.

Long-term travel insurance works differently—and getting the right policy means understanding how trip length, activities, and changing plans affect your coverage.

Why Standard Travel Insurance Won't Work

Standard travel insurance is designed for fixed, short trips. You know your departure date, return date, and exactly where you're going. That doesn't describe most backpacker trips.

Common Standard Policy Limits

  • • Maximum trip length: 30-90 days
  • • Single-destination focus
  • • No mid-trip extensions
  • • Return date must be specified

For trips longer than your policy's maximum, you're completely uninsured after that date passes—even if you didn't realize the policy had ended.

Common Challenges for Long-Term Travelers

Trip length limits

Most standard policies max out at 30-90 days. Long-term policies offer 6, 12, or 18+ month coverage.

Solution: Look for annual or backpacker-specific policies designed for extended travel.

Country limits

Some countries have longer healthcare waits or are excluded entirely (USA often costs extra).

Solution: Check geographic coverage carefully. Some policies charge extra for USA/Canada.

Return home visits

What happens if you return home mid-trip? Some policies end, others pause.

Solution: Look for policies that allow home visits without cancellation.

Changing plans

Backpacker trips evolve. You might stay longer, skip countries, or change routes entirely.

Solution: Flexible policies let you extend coverage or adjust dates online.

What to Look For in Long-Term Policies

Trip Length Flexibility

The best backpacker policies let you buy coverage for a specific period, then extend online while you're traveling. No need to know your exact return date upfront.

Multi-Country Coverage

Regional policies (Asia, Europe, Worldwide) simplify coverage across multiple destinations. Check whether "Worldwide" includes or excludes the USA—most policies treat American coverage separately due to high healthcare costs.

Home Country Visits

If you fly home for a wedding, Christmas, or emergency, does your coverage pause? End completely? Continue but exclude the home country? This varies significantly between providers.

Activity Coverage

Backpackers tend to do more adventurous activities—trekking, diving, motorbike rides. Make sure your policy covers what you'll actually do, not just what you think you'll do.

Gap Year Insurance: Special Considerations

Gap year travelers (typically 18-25) have specific needs:

  • Volunteer work: If you're volunteering, some policies exclude manual labor or require volunteer program coverage.
  • Working holidays: Paid work abroad is often excluded. Check if casual/seasonal work is covered or needs separate insurance.
  • Parental consent: Some policies require parental signatures for under-18s.
  • Mental health: Extended travel can be challenging. Check coverage for mental health support abroad.

Round-the-World Trip Insurance

RTW trips lasting 12-18 months need comprehensive worldwide coverage. Key considerations:

RTW Insurance Checklist

  • Worldwide coverage including USA (or specifically excluding if you're skipping it)
  • 12-18 month policy length with extension options
  • Adventure sports add-on for trekking, diving, etc.
  • Electronics coverage for camera, laptop, phone
  • 24/7 emergency assistance in all time zones
  • Repatriation coverage back to home country
